A liver specialist also known as a hepatologist identifies and treats problems pertaining to the liver, bile duct, gallbladder and the pancreas. Some common issues that a specialist can treat are : cirrhosis, liver cancer, hepatitis, ascites.
It is better to consult a specialist when you experience symptoms like sudden gastrointestinal bleeding, jaundice or deep yellow or brown-coloured urine.
High or low values in the liver function blood test are also a cause of concern as it may point to an underlying issue like cirrhosis, hepatitis or medication overdose.
The doctor would listen to the patient’s symptoms, check previous assessments, if any and would suggest the further course of action. Depending on the disease and its magnitude, he can come up with a customised treatment plan.
When you experience recurring, stabbing pain in the upper right abdomen below the right ribs, it is better to check up with the doctor. It is always good to see a doctor if the pain interferes with daily activities.
Some methods of cirrhosis treatments are cutting down on alcohol, consuming Vitamin E, antiviral drugs for hepatitis induced cirrhosis and in the worst-case scenario, liver transplant.
A liver function test helps in ascertaining the liver health by checking the level of liver enzymes, proteins and bilirubins. A doctor would suggest the test to check for liver damage from infections like hepatitis or if the patient has a condition like fatty liver disease, anaemia, high blood pressure, gall bladder disease.
