There are several common problems that can lead to children being admitted to a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Some of these problems include:
Respiratory failure: This occurs when a child’s lungs are unable to provide enough oxygen to their body or remove enough carbon dioxide.
Sepsis: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s immune response to infection becomes dysregulated, leading to widespread inflammation and organ dysfunction.
Cardiac failure: This can occur due to a variety of reasons such as congenital heart defects, cardiomyopathy, or arrhythmias.
Trauma: Children can be admitted to the PICU due to injuries sustained from accidents or physical abuse.
Neurological problems: These can include seizures, traumatic brain injuries, and meningitis.
Metabolic problems: This includes conditions such as diabetic ketoacidosis, metabolic acidosis, or electrolyte imbalances.
Poisoning or drug overdose: Accidental or intentional ingestion of toxic substances or medications can lead to the need for intensive care.
Post-operative care: Some children may require intensive care after undergoing surgery, especially if the surgery was complex or involved a major organ system.
Overall, the reasons for admission to the PICU can be varied and complex, and require specialized care from a team of healthcare professionals.
