Chennai, 20 June 2023: Doctors team at Rela Hospital gives a new lease of life to 92-year-old with Dual Mobility Hip Implant Surgery. Mr. Raghavendra Rao, aged 92 years and a resident of Chennai was referred to Rela Hospitals and he suffered from a broken hip due to a low velocity fall in his residence and was bedridden.
Upon consultation with Dr. Ashok S. Gavaskar, Clinical Lead – Orthopedics, Head – Joint Replacement Services, Rela Hospital, he decided to proceed with a total hip replacement surgery by replacing his fractured hips with the Dual Mobility Hip implant which gives the patient unmatched mobility without fear of instability or dislocation.
“The patient was surprisingly a very active man for his age. Even as he was bed ridden, he was keen to get on his feet and walk. We offered him a dual mobility hip implant and a partial hip replacement option to choose from. Based on our recommendation to go for a dual mobility hip implant, the patient is today walking and as active as he was earlier,” Dr Ashok commented.
“The key challenge we faced with this particular patient was to ensure the surgery is completed within 60 minutes keeping in mind his age factor and other health related complications. Furthermore, with his history of lifestyle diseases due to his age, we took extra precautions by consulting a cardiologist and an anesthetic expert” said Dr. Ashok.
The elderly are the ones who benefit the most by early and definitive surgical management for once they have broken their hips, the only possibility to make them walk again is through this effective surgical therapy. The advantage of dual mobility hip implant is there are no restrictions in the movement of the body. A person can sit, squat, fold their legs and even use the Indian style of toilets if they so prefer without any pain in their hips. They have the absolute freedom to do as they please within 24 hours of surgery.
