Non-COVID Services during COVID Pandemic
Share the article

The pandemic has made the whole world focus on only one thing – Sickness. All other aspects of life have taken a back seat for everyone. For hospitals, pandemic or no pandemic, sickness and patients are encountered day in and out. Emergencies and life-threatening illness do not wait for pandemics to pass. Hospitals should be geared to deal with, and continue to save lives from ‘non Covid’ illness even as the war with COVID rages on. This requires strong protocols for patient management, infectious disease policies to prevent infection/ cross infection, resource management, manpower management and commitment towards providing uncompromised healthcare always.

Uninterrupted Non-COVID services

Dr.Rela Hospital at Chromepet has performed nearly 400 life-saving procedures through surgical and non-surgical management in the last 4 months. Procedures were performed for various conditions such as:

  • Cancer of the oral cavity, pancreas, liver tumor in adults and children and brain tumors
  • Cardiac emergencies requiring immediate angiogram and stenting
  • Non-cardiac interventions
  • Trauma and Accident, mostly fall and injury among young adults and children ( as road traffic accident emergencies were relatively lower due to the travel restrictions)
  • Transplantations- 4 paediatric bone marrow transplants for Thalassemia, 25 liver transplants on 11 adults and 14 children and 1 combined liver and kidney transplant
  • Normal and high-risk pregnancies
  • Preterm and high-risk deliveries

Special accomplishments during the pandemic

The case of a 15-year-old son of a labourer was special. He was rushed to our hospital falling a fall from height with multiple fractures and injury to liver, spleen and kidney. He underwent 3 surgeries and was successfully managed by a multidisciplinary team, discharged from the hospital and is on the road to complete recovery.

Another worthy of mention is the situation faced by 5 foreign nationals. They had arrived prior to the lockdown for liver transplants from different countries. When the lockdown threw up new challenges, they did not lose hope, but waited patiently for 3 months trusting that the hospital would do its best for them at the appropriate time. Their trust was rewarded. After a careful evaluation of the risks of the pandemic vs risks of deteriorating health, they underwent liver transplants successfully and are on their way to a new life.

War on the COVID front

Simultaneously, as these life-saving procedures were happening at Dr.Rela Institute , the hospital continued to fulfil its social commitment by rising up to meet the need of the hour and treating close to 1000 COVID patients in its exclusive COVID hospital, a hospital with a dedicated, exclusive, strong team of doctors, nurses, para medical and operations staff.

As a leading healthcare organisation with international standards, Dr.Rela Hospital has clearly imbibed the mantra that “we need to learn to co-exist” with the COVID pandemic as life- saving procedures to patients for other illnesses continue.
