Madurai Man’s Heart saves 36-year-old Salem Farmer’s Life

Chennai, November 17th, 2022: The heart harvested from a 27-year-old man who died in Rajaji Government Hospital in Madurai was flown to Chennai airport and transported to Rela Hospital through the green corridor for a heart transplant surgery. The recipient is a 36-year-old farmer in Salem who was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy for seven years and had severe ventricular dysfunction. The heart transplant was performed under Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.
The donor, a 27 -year-old man from Madurai had a brain injury due to a road accident in his hometown and was admitted to the government hospital in Madurai on 14th November 2022. He did not heed treatment and was declared brain-dead on the 16th of November. His family was counseled and they consented to organ donation. The alert for the heart organ was sent to the Tamil Nadu Organ registry which was later allocated to Rela Hospital as per standard registry protocol.
A team of 6 Doctors from Rela Hospital led by Dr. Mohan and Dr Prem flew into Madurai on the 17th morning to retrieve the organ from the donor. The team left Madurai hospital with the retrieved heart through the green corridor created by the Madurai police team and flew into Chennai airport at 12.40 pm. Rela Hospital ambulance along with security personnel at the airport speedily transported the heart through a green corridor route created by the Chennai police.
