Cyclists pedal 110 km to raise awareness on organ donation

Rela Hospital and the We are Chennai Cycling Group collaborated for the “Rela Tenacity 110K Cyclothon,” an initiative aimed at raising awareness about organ donation, paying tribute to the families of organ donors, and encouraging more individuals to participate in this noble cause.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO of Rela Hospital. Several family members of organ donors were honored during the event, recognizing their selfless contributions to organ donation. Among the remembered organ donors, some were quite young, including a 12-year-old child and a 21-year-old young adult, who tragically lost their lives but generously bestowed the gift of life to others in need.

Starting at 5:30 AM from Rela Hospital in Chromepet, more than 500 cyclists embarked on a picturesque 110-kilometer journey. The route took them through Tambaram, Perungalathur, Padappai, Oragadam, Thirukachur, Palur, Pazhyaseevaram, Ezhichur, Theresapuram, Kolathur, Manimangalam, and Mudichur before concluding back at Rela Hospital. Participants enjoyed a diverse landscape, cycling through both modern areas like the Oragadam Industrial Corridor and natural settings along the banks of the Palar river. They passed through charming rustic villages with stunning hills and lakes in the background.

Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO of Rela Hospital, highlighted the significance of the Rela Tenacity 110K Cyclothon, calling it a symbol of unity, awareness, and progress in both cycling and organ donation. He emphasized the importance of organ donation awareness and paying tribute to donors who have given the gift of life. He also noted the urgent need for more organ donors, citing long waiting lists for transplants at Rela Hospital and across Tamil Nadu.
