September 2, 2020
Male infertility affects 30% of couples having difficulty in getting pregnant. Male infertility has many causes. Andrology is the branch of medicine that deals with diagnosing and treating male infertility. A complete health check-up and reproductive health check-up is done to ascertain the cause of male infertility. Treatment will depend on the cause of male infertility. We give below the different types of treatments for male infertility.
Treatments offered for male infertility
Surgery
Surgical correction of malformations, varicoceles, obstructed vas deferens and reversal of previous vasectomy help correct certain fertility problems. Sperm retrieval directly from the testicles using sperm retrieval techniques offers men with no sperm in their ejaculate a chance of having a baby.
Advanced treatments for sexual intercourse problems
Men with erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation are treated with medication when required. Counselling also helps men with psychological issues overcome them and regain sexual control.
Hormone treatment
If there is a hormone deficiency or a problem in how hormones are used, hormone treatments and medications are prescribed to correct the discrepancies.
Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)
IVF is the most common ART procedure used. Sperm is obtained naturally or through sperm retrieval techniques if there is a lack of sperm in the ejaculate. This method is used to fertilise the egg in one of the following ways.
IUI
The collected sperm is inserted into the uterus during intrauterine insemination (IUI) for natural fertilisation in the womb
IVF
Sperm is placed with retrieved eggs in a petri dish culture for fertilisation to occur. After fertilisation, the embryos are transferred into the uterus of the woman. This is called Invitro Fertilisation.
ICSI
If there are abnormalities of the sperm, then the sperm is directly injected into the egg to complete fertilisation. This is called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection.
IMSI
Extreme magnification under powerful microscopes reveal severe abnormalities that would otherwise not be discovered. The best sperm is chosen for ICSI increasing the chances of success.
Donor Sperm
If there is a complete lack of sperm or if the sperm carry a genetic defect that may be passed on to the foetus, donor sperm may be used.
