COVID-19 is a respiratory condition. it is a novel viral infection with varied clinical presentation. It’s a pro thrombotic state capable of blocking the blood vessels in the body leading to stroke, pulmonary embolism, ischemic limb etc.

Symptoms of COVID-19

COVID-19 presents different symptoms in different people. Symptoms begin 2-14 days after contact with infected people. The most common symptoms that are present in nearly everyone include fever, fatigue, dry cough, loss of appetite, body aches and shortness of breath. In addition to these common symptoms, some people have additional symptoms.

The less common symptoms of COVID-19 are:

  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Chills (sometimes shaking chills)
  • Loss of smell and taste
  • Stuffy nose
  • Mucus
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

When the disease progresses to severe stage, it presents emergency symptoms that require immediate hospitalization.

Emergency symptoms include:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Constant chest pain
  • Pressure in the chest
  • Bluish lips or face
  • Sudden confusion
  • Inability to wake up or stay awake
  • Stroke

While COVID-19 infects nearly everyone, the elderly, the very young children, people with co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension or cardiovascular disease are at a higher risk of developing the severe disease. If you are in the high-risk group, you should be more vigilant and follow hand hygiene, social distancing, wear mask and isolate yourself to reduce the risk of infection to minimum.
