Risks of Heart Disease

The incidence of heart disease in young people is rising. One of the main factors that contribute towards this phenomenon is our lifestyle. We have seen high-end cars being towed away to the junkyard after a few disastrous hours while vintage cars in all their shining glory win grand rallies much beyond their predicted lifetime. The difference is in the usage. Careful handling and good maintenance are the key for longevity.

This is true even for your heart.

Heart disease strikes when your heart becomes vulnerable. If the blood supply to your heart is compromised, if your heart muscles are weakened, if you have chronic diseases that also affect your heart, if you are constantly stressed out, then your heart becomes weak. These are some of the risk factors that can increase your chance of getting heart disease. Let’s see if you are at risk.

You are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease or heart disease if you

  • Smoke
  • Have high LDL or bad cholesterol
  • Have low HDL or good cholesterol
  • Have uncontrolled diabetes
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Are obese
  • Are under severe stress
  • Have difficulty managing anger
  • Have a sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise

These factors hit your heart hard. When blood vessels are clogged with plaque, when you are under great stress or are constantly angry, when you gain immense weight, when your blood vessels narrow down under the influence of nicotine, then your heart works overtime to pump blood throughout your body. Over a period of time if you do not control these conditions and bring them back to manageable levels, your heart will simply give up.

Your heart is a miracle of nature, as is your whole body. Every cell in your body requires oxygen and nutrition rich blood for survival. This is provided from before you were born till you take your last breath by your heart.

Is it not in your own interest to keep your heart in good condition?

Your heart does not ask for much.

For working non-stop throughout your years on this earth, for powering all your physical and intellectual pursuits, for helping you create new life on earth and for keeping you on your feet till the end, your heart demands a very small price- just the right treatment.

What your heart needs from you to work well and keep you at peak performance:

  • To reduce your risk of heart disease
  • Quit smoking
  • Blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar under control
  • Lots of vitamins and minerals from vegetables and fruits
  • Very little of salt and saturated fats
  • Limited portion size and number of helpings at meals
  • Low-fat protein, especially plant-based proteins
  • Weight in the healthy range
  • Better management of stress and anger
  • Exercise for at least 30 minutes most days of the week
  • Good company that keeps you smiling
  • Regular heart check-up if you are at risk

Certain risk factors such as your age and family history of heart disease cannot be controlled, but many factors can. A healthy lifestyle, moments of happiness and regular check-ups are all your heart asks for to keep you smiling through life. Ensure these and you will live to be a golden oldie.
