Preparing for Fatherhood: A Guide for New Dads

The moment you receive news that you are going to become a father is a life-transforming moment in your life. Pregnancy and childbirth are no longer the sole bastions of women, and the role of a father is being redefined every day. Being a hands-on father is not only much appreciated, but it is also gratifying. Just as women have to learn to become mothers, men, too, have to learn to become fathers. Preparing for fatherhood is an exciting and vital journey that helps you step confidently into your new role, ready to support your partner and form a strong bond with your baby.

How to Prepare for Fatherhood

If you are about to become a proud father, here are ways to help you become a worthy one.

Change Your Lifestyle

Your bachelor days and ways may have suited you and your wife, but they may not be healthy for your baby. Quit smoking as even secondhand smoke is harmful to your baby, before and after birth. Limit the intake of alcohol as it improves your mental, physical, and emotional health. Curtail your partying as you need to be grounded and available 24/7 for your family. While all this may sound extremely limiting, you will realise their importance when you can actively contribute towards your baby’s welfare.

Participate in the Pregnancy

Choose the best perinatal centre and accompany your wife on her prenatal check-ups whenever you can. Seeing your baby and hearing the heartbeat for the first time is truly magical. Do not miss it. Take part in childbirth classes, learn massage techniques to offer relief. Store important contact numbers in your mobile and find the fastest route to the hospital. Set up a support system of close friends and family you can call for assistance in case you need help.

Share the Workload

If you have never done any housework, now is the time to start. There may be days when your wife feels low and is unable to accomplish much. Pitch in and share her workload. Cook nutritious food for her, increase the time you spend with her, find little things that bring her joy, and do them. Ensure that she eats, sleeps, and exercises well. Baby-proof your home so that you can bring your baby into a safe place.

Learn to Care For Your Baby

Becoming a father may be intimidating, but there is help. Attend antenatal classes with your wife. Learn to carry the baby in the correct manner. Learn to change diapers. You can bond with our baby in many ways. Looking at your baby, talking or singing to them, and burping them are just a few examples. Learn them. Plan for your baby’s immediate and long-term future.

Your baby will be the apple of your eye, and you will be the centre of your baby’s universe. Live up to your baby’s expectations by being there for him/her. It will be worth it.
