Adolescent Gynaecology

As the name implies, adolescent gynaecology refers to the gynaecologic concerns relating to young women. Teenage girls can experience many different issues with so many developments happening in their body. Our adolescent gynaecologists are best trained to evaluate the issue and give counselling, so our adolescent patients can easily accommodate the changes that are happening within them.

Also, we introduce them to the concept of sex education and help them understand the implications of STIs and unwanted pregnancies that may arise due to unprotected sex. Counselling is also given to teenagers that find a different interest in their sexual orientation. Here are some of the most common problems that we deal with in adolescent females.

Breast pain

This is a common discomfort experienced by pubescent women and is termed as mastalgia. The pain can extend from a mild tenderness or tightness to a more severe burning pain. The onset of the pain can begin a few days before periods start. Breast pain is classified into cyclic and noncyclic. Cyclic breast pain is caused due to the menstrual cycle and usually abates over the course of the period. It is often caused by hormonal changes and can be easily treated therapeutically. Non-cyclic breast pain is caused due to external factors such as breast shape or size. The treatment typically involves anti-inflammatory and other prescription drugs.

Vaginal Discharge

Vaginal discharge is a white coloured fluid from the vagina and can be produced in the uterus, cervix or vagina. It is a natural process and serves as protection against infection in the region. It also lubricates the vagina and helps keep the tissues in the region healthy. Vaginal discharge becomes a cause for concern when the consistency or odor of the discharge changes. This can be accompanied by constant itching. The main reason behind it is an infection, usually bacterial or yeast. It can also be the result of an STI such as Gonorrhea or Chlamydia trachomatis. Treatments include antifungal or antibiotic medication. Certain home remedies such as ointments and creams along with good hygiene practices can significantly help to alleviate the problem.

Menstrual disturbances

Pain during menses, delayed periods, heavy bleeding are the key menstrual issues that patients come with to our clinic. Menstrual irregularities are common in adolescents and often remedy themselves. However, certain symptoms such as bleeding between periods, mood swings and sudden onset of pain should not be ignored. It is difficult to classify what is abnormal or irregular as every individual experiences it differently. If such problems persist, it is advisable to seek professional help at the earliest so that a treatment can be formulated that best addresses the problem.

Polycystic ovaries

Polycystic ovaries occur in women due to hormonal imbalances. The primary reason is the presence of excessive male hormone, androgen. Polycystic ovaries are characterised by enlargement of the ovaries coupled with increased number of follicles. This completely disrupts the functioning of ovaries and can lead to detrimental changes of the body in the long term. Treatment of polycystic ovaries often involve lifestyle changes accompanied by hormonal therapies and pills to incite ovulation.
