What You Need to Know About This Silent Liver Disease Called NASH (Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis)

Here’s a startling fact: You can get liver disease even without drinking alcohol. When fat accumulates in the liver, it causes a condition called Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (or NAFLD). On the other hand, Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) is a form of NAFLD that has the potential to damage the liver.

NASH results when the accumulated fat in the liver causes hepatitis or inflammation and scarring or cirrhosis. Since NASH causes liver scarring, it is also life-threatening.

Causes

Few people know why fat accumulation in the liver ends up as NASH. Perhaps, inflammation is triggered by something in the environment, or it could be congenital. NASH could also be caused for these reasons:

  • Obesity
  • Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
  • High cholesterol and high triglycerides
  • Metabolic syndrome

People over 50 years of age and have one or more of the causes mentioned above are targets for developing NASH.

Symptoms

NASH is also called the “silent” disease as many people could suffer from a few of its symptoms such as pain, fatigue, weakness, weight loss or discomfort in the upper right abdomen.

Diagnosis

To find out if there is an accumulation of fat in the liver, the doctor may ask for certain tests to be done, such as:

  • Blood tests
  • An ultrasound of the stomach
  • CT scan
  • MRI
  • Biopsy

Treatment

By losing weight, one can manage NASH very well as the fat content will reduce and this will reduce liver scarring and inflammation. Overweight people will have to lose at least three to five per cent of their body weight which can be done by reducing sugars and fats intake. Alcohol should also be reduced to stop liver damage.

For patients of cirrhosis of the liver, medicines and surgeries can help treat NASH. But if the cirrhosis causes liver failure, the best solution is a liver transplant.
