Rela Institute Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy saidOur Institute has performed more than 100 paediatric liver transplants in less than 18 months, which makes our centre the world’s second largest paediatric liver transplant centre after China. However, the three liver transplants done on infants with biliary atresia from Nellore, Bangalore and Delhi in July 2020 during this pandemic despite travel restrictions and logistic difficulties are very special. These children couldn’t wait for the end of the pandemic. This is just one example of how safely we can perform complex surgeries by following strict infection control protocols during pandemic. As the virus is going to stay with us for a long period of time, it’s really important to perform surgeries and provide treatment for patients with any medical problems by creating a safe environment, as patients shouldn’t wait for medical assistance for months”
