Budd Chiari Syndrome Treatment: Symptoms & Causes

Budd Chiari Syndrome

A rare condition that affects just one in every million adults, Budd-Chiari syndrome results due to blood clots that partially or completely block blood flow out of the liver. This blockage could occur anywhere from the small or large veins that transport blood from the hepatic veins to the inferior vena cava. It is also known as Hepatic Vein Thrombosis (HVT).

Causes

Budd Chiari Syndrome can be due to genetic reasons, diseases or medication. Whatever causes blood clotting in the liver’s veins causes HVT.

Its most common causes are:

  • Congenital blood disorders
  • Vein inflammation
  • Liver cancer and trauma
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Infections
  • Pregnancy
  • Inflammatory disorders
  • Birth control pills
  • Connective tissue disorders
  • Immunosuppressant drugs

Symptoms

  • Nausea
  • Jaundice
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fluid accumulation in the abdomen
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Severe bleeding in the esophagus
  • Narrow or blocked veins

Diagnosis

Doctors think that this disorder is rampant in those who suffer from liver failure, ascites, cirrhosis or enlarged liver. Tests are conducted to check for liver functioning. If abnormal, Doppler ultrasonography, is done. For clear results, MRI or CT is done.

To widen the blood vessel or reroute the blood flow, surgery is the solution, called venography. A liver biopsy will confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment of HVT follows this pattern:

  • First, drugs are given to prevent or dissolve blood clots.
  • Next, procedures are done for better blood flow.
  • If liver failure is seen, liver transplantation is necessary.
  • Treatment will depend on the severity of the disorder.
