From the Desk of Prof Mohamed Rela

Professor Mohamed Rela

It gives me an immense pleasure to inform that our centre for excellence towards cancer care, “The Rela Institute – Cancer Centre” is now all set to deliver 360-degree Comprehensive Cancer Care. This Comprehensive Cancer Centre is built as “An Answer For Cancer”.

Keeping in mind the growing need for dedicated cancer centres and the increasing prevalence of cancer in our community, our management at Rela Institute decided to take this initiative.

With the best of medical infrastructure facilities and a clinical expert team comprising of radio-oncologists, surgical and medical oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists and trained radiation therapy nurses, we believe we are better placed to treat complex cancers such as those in the brain, spine, lung, liver, pancreas and prostate.

Why Rela

We certainly understand that not all cancers are the same and that is why we strive to provide individualistic care to the patients. Despite being built with advanced technology; patients will be treated under the team of Expert oncologists who is trained to make each and every decision by keeping a patient’s safety in mind. As a result, the treatments are always customized in a way to provide specialised care to our patients.

Our Specialised Departments

There are also medical terms for oncologists who specialize in caring for specific groups of patients or groups of cancers. Geriatric oncologists work with people with cancer who are age 65 and older. Older adults can have additional challenges. Geriatric oncologists specialize in providing the best care for older adults. Gynecologic oncologists treat cancers in such reproductive organs as the cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, uterus, vagina, and vulva. Hematologist-oncologists treat blood cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Neuro-oncologists treat cancers of the brain, spine, and nervous system. Pediatric oncologists treat cancer in children and teens. Some types of cancer occur most often in these younger age groups. When these types of cancer occasionally occur in adults, those adult patients may choose to work with a pediatric oncologist.

Thoracic oncologists treat cancers inside the chest area, including the lungs and esophagus. Urologic oncologists treat cancers in the genitourinary system, such as the bladder, kidneys, penis, prostate gland, and testicles.

Diagnostic tools of Oncology

Oncology depends on diagnostic tools like biopsy or removal of bits of the tumour tissue and examining it under the microscope. Other diagnostic tools include endoscopy for the gastrointestinal tract, imaging studies like X-rays, CT scanning, MRI scanning, ultrasound, and other radiological techniques, Scintigraphy, Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography, Positron emission tomography and nuclear medicine techniques etc.

Oncologists must first diagnose cancer, which is usually carried out via biopsy, endoscopy, X-ray, CT scanning, MRI, PET scanning, ultrasound or other radiological methods. Nuclear medicine can also be used to diagnose cancer, as can blood tests or tumor markers. Oncology is often linked with hematology, which is the branch of medicine that deals with blood and blood-related disorders. An oncologist is a doctor who treats cancer and provides medical care for a person diagnosed with cancer. An oncologist may also be called a cancer specialist.

True Beam

The TrueBeamTM System is an advanced radiotherapy system from Varian Medical Systems that has opened the door to new possibilities for the treatment of lung, breast, prostate, head and neck as well as other cancers. It is designed to deliver more safest and powerful cancer treatments with a pinpoint accuracy and precision. It uniquely integrates advanced imaging and motion management technologies within a sophisticated and relaxing architecture that makes it possible for our radiation oncologists to offer treatments for patients more quickly while monitoring and compensating for tumour motion.

PET-CT

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan is an imaging test that that can help reveal the metabolic or biochemical function of patients’ tissue and organs for an early detection and accurate staging of cancer. It uses a radioactive drug(tracer) to show both normal and abnormal metabolism of the tracer in diseases before the disease shows up on other imaging tests such as computerised tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This way it helps the oncologists to accurate analysis of cancer treatment and follow-up.

Mammogram

Mammogram is an X-ray of the breast which enable our oncologists to find the early onset of breast cancer at the earliest even when there are no symptoms. It is further used for screening by the departments to detect and diagnose breast disease in women who either have breast problems such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge. If the patients are pregnant, has medical history or prior surgeries they are expected to inform doctors and radiologists before screening as it expose patients to fewer dose of ionised radiation.

We, at Rela’s multispeciality hospital, offer state of art preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, and interventional oncology services. We are reputed to have the best oncologists in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
