Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy is the CEO and Senior Consultant Liver Intensivist and Anaesthetist at Dr. Rela Institute & Medical Centre. Rela Hospital is a 450 bedded multispecialty hospital which also houses one of world's largest liver transplant centre. He has completed undergraduate and postgraduate training in Anaesthesia in India before heading to the UK for further higher speciality training. He has spent nearly 6 years in the UK, gained experience in Anaesthesia & Intensive care and obtained FRCA from the Royal College of Anaesthetists, London.
He has returned back to India in 2009 and joined with Prof Mohamed Rela, the world-renowned liver transplant surgeon as a consultant and Clinical lead in Liver Anaesthesia and Intensive care at the Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai. He has become the Director of Institute of Liver Disease and Transplantation in 2016. During this time at this hospital, he has also headed the team which has rescued 110 patients by boats from the Hospital which was flooded by once in a century rain in Chennai in 2015.
He has moved to the new Hospital, Dr. Rela Institute & Medical Centre, Chennai in 2018 and has spearheaded the administrative and Doctors team in commissioning the Hospital. At the Dr. Rela Institute & Medical Centre, he has designed and developed the world’s largest liver intensive care unit.
He has got the experience in managing more than 2000 liver transplant recipients in the perioperative period including 500 paediatric liver transplants, more than 1600 living donor liver transplants (LDLT) and 400 deceased donor liver transplants (DDLT). He has also involved in setting up many liver units in India and abroad. He is part of the team which has performed liver transplantation on a 42 days old baby, India’s youngest ever to undergo liver transplantation in 2019.
He has published more than 40 articles in indexed journals and written 2 book chapters. He has been invited as a speaker in more than 60 National and International conferences so far. The Governor of Tamil Nadu had felicitated him for the contribution towards Tamil Nadu Organ Donation Programme in 2012. His special interest includes Acute liver failure, Paediatric liver transplantation, Liver intensive care, Patient safety and improving technology in health care.
