Experience

Past Experience (1997 – 2010)

Following his specialist training at Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Dr. Sandeep Gangaya Attaya was given the opportunity to work in high volume cardiac centres such as the Manipal Heart Foundation Hospital and the founding Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bangalore. Since 1998 he has participated in over 10,000 open and closed heart surgical procedures, diverse in both the complexity of the defect and the patient's age. His experience over the last 18 years includes over 5500 multivessel CABG'sCABG's (Coronary artery bypass), largely OP-CABG (Beating heart coronary artery bypass) using left ITA'sITA's (Internal mammary artery), free left and bilateral radial arteries, the use of a pedicled Rt GEPA (gastroepiploic artery as a vascular substitute for coronary artery bypass in over 50 cases), and over 150 re-operative CABG'sCABG's (Redo heart surgery).

He has performed a series of surgical coronary ostial reconstructions for isolated left main stem disease, surgical remodelling of the failing heart, also known as the Dor procedure, CABG with concomitant valve repairs/replacements and posts infarct VSR (Ventricular septal rupture) repairs, root and arch replacements for ascending and arch aneurysms, Abdominal aortic aneurysms and aorto bi-femoral bypass.

He is a trained pediatric cardiac surgeon, too. A significant percentage of his practice has involved treating neonates and children with complex heart disease, having operated on over 400 neonates and approximately 3500 children with congenital heart defects, with procedures ranging from systemic to P.A. shunts, VSD closures, TAPVC repairs, Aortopulmonary window, tetralogy corrections, conduit repairs for Pulmonary atresia, the Ross procedure in children and adults, interrupted aortic arch repairs and the arterial switch operation for D-TGA and Taussig Bing heart.

He is proficient in multiple valve replacements in children, including mitral and aortic valve repairs. He has performed over a dozen Ross procedures in patients as young as 5. In addition, corrective surgeries for congenital heart defects in infancy form a significant part of his repertoire.

In addition to his skills as a cardiac surgeon, he has been increasingly involved in managing surgical and clinical departments at significant institutes such as the Apollo Hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and, more recently, the Narayana Hrudayalaya in Jaipur, Rajasthan. As a result, focusing on the functioning of a hospital has gradually become a more significant part of his regular duties and is an area he is keenly involved in.

Narayana Hrudayalaya - Jaipur(July 2010 – July 2012)

In addition to being the lead surgeon at N.H. Jaipur, he served as the institute's Vice-President. He was active in the construction and implementation of this 150-bed multi-speciality hospital. Jaipur was one of the most ambitious moves of his career. It required him to undertake many administrative duties and challenges he had not faced before.

Global Hospitals India(Aug 2012 – Jan 2013)

He successfully performed 5 single lung transplants and the first successful heart transplant during his brief tenure, thus launching a comprehensive solid organ thoracic transplant program at this centre. In addition, he had an opportunity to set the stage for stem cell therapy for heart failure and initiate a Mechanical circulatory support program and a strong ECMO program associated with critical care specialists and pulmonologists.

Fortis Memorial Research Institute(Feb 2013 –Jan 2017)

Director and Chief of Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Organ transplantation & Mechanical Circulatory Support.

They have completed close to 900 heart surgeries in this brief tenure, including Pediatric and Adult. They have an approved Heart transplant and Mechanical Circulatory support program. They have successfully implanted North India 1st LVAD (as Destination Therapy. They have a very strong ECMO program in place. They have successfully performed 7 LVAD implants. They have the unique distinction of having performed the first pediatric LVAD implant for long term ventricular recovery as a bridge to recovery or heart transplant in the future. In addition, the pediatric LVAD implant is the first outside North America and Europe.

Gleneagles Global Hospital India(Feb 2017- April 2020)

Program Director and Chief of Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Organ transplantation & Mechanical Circulatory Support.

He took Charge of an ailing thoracic organ transplant program with a core volume of 3 transplants annually and transformed it into a high volume Heart and Lung Transplant service with outcomes reporting to the ISHLT.

The service completed its 100th thoracic organ transplant within 20 months, starting Feb 2017. He also performed 6 artificial Heart implants (LVAD). In the same period, including a Jarvik implant for a child (A world First outside Europe ).

Given their network of hospitals across India and position as a firm leader in the organ transplant area. They intend to allow the smooth transport of organs to recipients located at their centres within the room and guidelines of the national organ allocation laws.

Their efforts are to coordinate and upgrade the skills of all units across the hospitals to allow us to establish a prominent position with a firm commitment to being leaders in Heart and Lung transplantation in south Asia.
