The last stage of chronic liver disease is called cirrhosis. It may take years for chronic liver disease to progress to becoming cirrhosis. However, unfortunately, cirrhosis has no cure. You can, however, prevent it by having your chronic liver disease diagnosed and treated in time.

You can prevent developing cirrhosis by adopting some healthy lifestyle changes. They are:

Minimize Alcohol Consumption

When you drink a lot of alcohol habitually, it makes your liver swell. Over a protracted period of a decade or more, this causes cirrhosis. Heavy female alcoholics also suffer from cirrhosis.

You can reduce your chances of being diagnosed with cirrhosis by drinking a maximum of 14 units of alcohol per week.

Practice Hygienic Personal Habits

Cirrhosis is the inflammation of the liver, generally caused by a virus. These viruses are Hepatitis A, B and C. Of these, Hepatitis B and C can lead to cirrhosis. Whereas the Hepatitis B virus is passed from one carrier to another through semen, blood or other body fluids, Hepatitis C spreads through blood-to-blood contact. Anyone diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C has a good chance of developing cirrhosis.

You can avoid being prone to Hepatitis infection by having safe sex and not sharing needles to inject drugs. Don’t have a tattoo or body piercing done in unhygienic surroundings. Ensure that the tattooist uses sterilized needles and other instruments.

Have yourself vaccinated against Hepatitis B, particularly if you work in a hospital or clinic.

Eat Carefully

By eating fatty foods, you have an unhealthy accumulation of fats in your liver. This often leads to Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) which results in cirrhosis. NASH is related to conditions like diabetes, coronary artery disease, high cholesterol and obesity.

By eating nutritious food, limiting your portions and keeping to a healthy weight, you can reduce your chances significantly of developing not just NASH but cirrhosis too.

Drink a Lot of Coffee

You can reduce your chances of developing cirrhosis by drinking a couple of cups of coffee a day, if not more. According to research, drinking two cups of coffee per day helps reduce the chances of getting cirrhosis by 44% and four cups a day brings down the incidence of coffee to 65%.

Fight Stress

There is a definite link between stress and liver health. In fact, stress causes liver conditions. So, to avoid the ill-effects of stress on your liver, learn to relax every so often. Spend time with a hobby, travel for leisure or take up swimming, dancing or cycling. Do whatever de-stresses you, like cooking or gardening, if you like.

Exercise Regularly

With regular exercise, the liver benefits because it prevents any fat accumulation in the liver region.Fatty liver, as you know, isn’t a nice thing to have as it causes inflammation. And inflammation leads to the development of Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH). NASH, in turn, hardens and scars the liver and may also cause liver cancer or cirrhosis. So, realize the benefits of exercise and do it regularly.

Get onto a Course of Statins

Most people take statins as a treatment for high cholesterol. However, they can also protect you from cirrhosis, particularly if you already are diagnosed with Hepatitis B and C. According to research, patients of Hepatitis B who were on statins were far less likely to be diagnosed with cirrhosis than those with Hepatitis but did not take statins.

Get Screened for Hepatitis

If you live in a country where Hepatitis B and C are not uncommon, say, Africa or South Asia, you should go in for regular screenings for cirrhosis. Early detection can prevent the development of this disease. Also, get vaccinated for Hepatitis B.
