Diabetes can harm nearly every part of the body leading to severe limitations. Eyes, kidneys, heart, tissue and nerve damage can be life threatening. These are caused by uncontrolled levels of blood sugar. The good news is that diabetes can be managed effectively with some lifestyle modifications and medications.

Simple steps to manage diabetes

  • Be careful what and how much you eat
    Talk to your doctor and dietician about your ideal diet. Limit your carbohydrate intake. Eat a well-balanced meal with a good mix of starch, fruits, vegetables, proteins and fats. Avoid sweets. Stay hydrated. Drink enough water and non-sugary drinks.
  • Stick to your medication schedule
    You will either be taking oral medicines of insulin injections depending on your condition. Follow the schedule given by your doctor strictly. Learn to co-ordinate meals and medications to avoid low or high blood sugar, which can be dangerous.
  • Exercise regularly
    Regular exercise is vital to keep in good condition. At least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days is ideal. Walking is one of the easiest exercises and is very effective.
    Check with your doctor before you start any new exercise schedule.
  • Take extra care about your feet
    Diabetic patients may have nerve or blood circulation problems, which could lead to diabetic foot. Wash your feet and pat them dry. Keep them clean and dry always. Wear correct fitting socks and footwear to avoid wounds. If you have a wound, visit your doctor immediately for treatment.
  • Have a regular eye checkup
    Diabetic retinopathy can lead to permanent vision loss. The only way to prevent this is to have a regular eye checkup. Early diagnosis and treatment can limit damage and save your vision.
  • Manage stress
    When stressed, your body secretes hormones, which can raise your blood sugar levels and your regular medication may not be able manage it. Learn ways to mange stress, take breaks, engage in stress relieving activities and live healthy
  • Manage other health conditions
    If you have hypertension, heart problems, cholesterol of other health conditions, keep them under control. This will keep your body in good condition.

You may have diabetes, but it need not limit your life. Follow your doctor’s instructions, eat, sleep and exercise sensibly. You can live a full and healthy life.
