Breast Cancer Symptoms You Should Be Aware Of

Breast cancer symptoms can be detected early with a little time and effort. A thorough breast self- examination will help you notice the symptoms early if you know the symptoms. So, here are the symptoms you have to look for when you do a self-exam.

Breast cancer is a cancer of breast tissue. It can be felt when the breasts are examined.

Symptoms of breast cancer

  • A lump in the breast or thickening of breast tissue which will be different from surrounding tissue
  • A sudden change in the size, shape or appearance of the breast. The two breasts will not be identical, but if there is a sudden change then it has to be checked.
  • Changes in the nipple and surrounding pigmented area. Normal nipple may become inverted.
  • Discharge from the nipple or crusting of nipple.
  • Changes in the skin of the breasts. The skin may appear red, develop dimples or pits and may peel, scale or flake.
  • Pain or discomfort in the breasts.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, so all women should do a breast self-exam every month and women over 40 should have a mammogram screening every year.

The risk factors of developing breast cancer include age over 40, family history of breast cancer, earlier breast conditions, radiation exposure, having your first period before 12 years and menopause after 55 years, having your first baby after 30 years, never having a baby, post-menopausal hormone therapy, obesity and alcohol consumption.

Breast cancer can be treated successfully if detected early. 1 out of 2 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer does not survive. The main reason is because it is detected at a later stage. The five-year survival rate for women treated with first stage breast cancer is 90%, one of the highest among all cancers. Be aware of your breasts and check them thoroughly every month to catch problems early.
