Neurological emergencies during COVID 19 pandemic

The following clinical situations have been defined as Neurological emergencies:

• Acute Stroke
• Status Epilepticus
• CNS infections
• Guillian Barre Syndrome

Acute ischemic stroke (blood clot in the vessels supplying the brain) is a neuro emergency where TIME IS BRAIN. Treatment involves lysing the clot called thrombolysis to be done within 4.5 hours of stroke onset and clot retrieval by a procedure called Mechanical thrombectomy to be done within 24 hours of onset of stroke. Undergoing these treatments within the stipulated time leads to better clinical outcomes for the patients.

Similarly in guillian barre syndrome (sudden weakness of all 4 limbs) immediate nerve conduction study followed by treatment is necessary to avoid complications and for better recovery of weakness.

In case of status epilepticus (continuous fits), controlling the fits as fast as possible is absolutely mandatory.
