According to experts, heart disease increases the chances of severe COVID-19. What they also say is that heart disease does not increase your chances of being infected by coronavirus. So if you have a heart condition, what should you do to keep safe?

I have a heart problem. What should I do to prevent infection?

If you have a heart problem, you should be extra careful. You should follow the guidelines of ICMR and our government. We give them below for your reference.

  • Avoid going out
  • If it is unavoidable, wear a mask before you step out of your home
  • Avoid crowded places
  • Stay at least 6 ft away from other people
  • Carry a hand sanitiser and use it every time you touch frequently touched surfaces
  • Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose
  • At home wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Sanitise frequently touched surfaces
  • Stock up your medicines and essentials

What should I do to protect my heart?

As your focus shifts to COVID, you may ignore your heart. Remember your heart problem takes precedence over COVID worries. Take your medications on schedule. If you have a scheduled checkup, don’t postpone without talking to your doctor. Check if tele-consultation is available and consult your doctor without leaving your home. If you develop any new symptoms or have any recurrent problems, consult your doctor immediately.

How do I maintain my heart health?

As the lockdown interferes with your normal schedule, you will have to find out ways to keep healthy. Walk inside your home for about 20 to 30 minutes every day. Be physically active in any way you can, eat a healthy diet, have a good night’s sleep, limit your news time to minimize stress. Take your medicines regularly.

I may be exposed to COVID-19 patient. What should I do?

If you think you have been exposed to the virus, be vigilant. At the first sign of COVID symptoms contact your doctor.

The symptoms of COVID-19 include

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Dry cough
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Loss of taste and smell
  • Chest pain or discomfort

Manage your heart problem effectively by strictly following your doctor and dietician’s advice. If you keep your heart problem under control, with the right treatment at the right time, you can overcome COVID-19.
